ITO Kouki, ramie and silk for summer
ITO Kouki is a very special ribbon yarn made of ramie and silk, and a wonderful choice for elegant summer knits. Ramie is not referred to as the "linen of the East" for nothing. The fiber is harvested from the stems of a plant in the nettle family and ranks among the highest quality bast fibers available.
What makes ramie so special? The fiber is incredibly strong while possessing a beautiful, almost silky luster. Processing it remains labor-intensive to this day and can only be partially automated, giving this unique natural fiber its exclusive character.
Combined with silk, it creates Kouki, a light and elegant yarn with a lovely, smooth surface. The ramie adds stability and ensures that the finished knitwork holds its shape without stretching out easily.
I find Kouki particularly gorgeous for summer wardrobes: breezy tops, elegant tees, or lightweight cardigans gain a wonderfully refined look and a beautiful drape.
