Sangaku – geometric harmony to knit

Sangakus (or San Gakus) are small wooden tablets, often beautifully illustrated, that were offered in Japanese Shinto shrines to entertain visitors. Mathematical problems were depicted graphically on them.

Sangakus date back to the Edo period (1603–1867), when Japan was largely isolated from the Western world. People of all classes – from farmers to samurai – enjoyed these geometric puzzles and exchanged the wooden tablets with one another.

While this shawl is not a traditional Sangaku, it draws on this ancient idea and transforms it into its own geometric pattern.

Knit your Sangaku and bring the shapes to life on your needles! 🧶
